Design note
For welded joints, the weld length alone is not enough; the load path through the joint must also be checked. Eccentric loading, heat input, distortion, and accessible inspection methods should be considered next to the strength calculation. On dynamically loaded parts, weld starts and stops can create stress concentrations, so fatigue review should be treated as a separate design step.
In fillet welds, effective throat size is a key strength input.
