Definition
Voltage is electrical potential difference.
Why it matters
It is a basic input for selecting motors, sensors, and control circuits.
How it is used
In a design check, first define the relevant load, dimension, material, or flow condition. Then interpret this term by its role in the formula and compare it with limits.
A 24 V DC control circuit is common in industrial automation.

Engineering interpretation
Voltage is a potential difference, not the same as available power. A motor, sensor, or control circuit must be checked for nominal voltage, tolerance, transient behavior, insulation, current demand, and grounding. A 24 V control supply can still produce unacceptable voltage drop if the cable is long or the load changes.
Practical checklist
- Confirm nominal, minimum, maximum, and transient voltage.
- Check current, cable drop, protection, polarity, and connector rating.
- Separate signal reference and protective-earth requirements where applicable.
