Grinding
Grinding is a core engineering term. Definition, usage notes, and a practical example.
Prepared and technically reviewed by: TORQYX Engineering Team · Methodology and team
Definition
Grinding removes material with abrasive grains for precision finishing.
Why it matters
It is used for hard parts, tight tolerances, and good surface finish.
How it is used
In a design check, first define the relevant load, dimension, material, or flow condition. Then interpret this term by its role in the formula and compare it with limits.
Bearing seat surfaces can be precision ground.

Engineering interpretation
Grinding is often selected for tight size, form, and surface requirements, but heat generation and wheel condition can damage the result. Coolant delivery, dressing, workholding, spark-out, and inspection temperature all matter. A low roughness value alone does not prove that form, residual stress, or dimensional stability is acceptable.
Practical checklist
- Define size, roundness, waviness, roughness, and inspection method separately.
- Check burn risk, dressing interval, coolant filtration, and thermal distortion.
- Inspect the functional datum and the finished surface at a controlled temperature.
