Casting
Casting is a core engineering term. Definition, usage notes, and a practical example.
Prepared and technically reviewed by: TORQYX Engineering Team · Methodology and team
Definition
Casting forms parts by pouring molten material into a mold.
Why it matters
It is useful for complex shapes and production volumes.
How it is used
In a design check, first define the relevant load, dimension, material, or flow condition. Then interpret this term by its role in the formula and compare it with limits.
Pump housings and engine blocks are common casting examples.

Engineering interpretation
Casting design depends on alloy, mold process, solidification, draft, feeding, and expected defects. A cast geometry that is acceptable for sand casting may be unsuitable for die casting or investment casting. Wall transitions, shrinkage allowances, cores, and inspection access should be reviewed before the drawing is released.
Practical checklist
- Identify the casting process and its dimensional capability.
- Avoid abrupt section changes and provide practical draft and fillets.
- Define porosity, surface, dimensional, and pressure-test acceptance criteria.
